According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five children and one in three adults are obese.

In the  LA Times article "Medical cost of childhood obesity is $19,000, researchers say," writer Mary MacVean explains the real 'weight' a child can bear upon their lifetime medical costs.

According to research conducted by the Duke Global Health Institute and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore, $14 billion alone is spent just for the obese 10-year-olds in the United States.

Analyzing the data reveals how the reduction of childhood obesity can have its economic benefits as well as its health benefits. The researchers wrote that knowing the costs of obesity is one way to justify the expenditures to prevent it.
