ISLANDWIDE SEARCH FOR HEALTHY SNACKS CREATED BY KIDS

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach and Hawaii 5210 offer award, class party, and menu highlight.

HONOLULU, HI (October 25, 2013) – Executive Chef Sven Ullrich of Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa in partnership with the statewide nonprofit healthy family initiative, Hawaii 5210, invite students in grades K-5; 6-8; and 9-12 to submit their own recipe of their favorite healthy snacks to Best5210Menu@hyatt.com.  Students are asked to include their school name in the submission and only one entry per student is permitted.  The deadline to submit is Friday, November 22.  Extra points will go to recipes submitted by November 15, incorporate the DOE Wellness Guidelines for snacks, and/or feature local ingredients.  One winner will be selected from each of the three school categories.  Winning snacks will be featured at SHOR for one semester, with a portion of proceeds going to 5210, and each winner will also receive a party for their class.

“We are so excited to be taking the For Kids, By Kids challenge into the schools.  We want kids to feel good about what they are eating and to be adventurous when it comes to trying local fruits and vegetables. The idea behind the contest is to engage our young generation of chefs to explore their kitchens and minds and come up with something that will provide them with energy as well as be satisfying to their overall health,” says Ullrich.

“The 5210 initiative is to promote healthy eating and active living to help prevent childhood obesity in Hawaii through a coordinated, collaborative, locally relevant health education campaign.  We partnered with Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach to help us in educating youth about eating healthy at snack times,” adds Dr. May Okihiro, Director, Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go! Initiative

To provide kids with extra help in creating the menus, Executive Chef Ullrich will also be providing healthy cooking tips on the 5210 website and Facebook.  Hawaii 5210 aims to educate youth to eat up to 5 fruits and vegetables a day, less than 2 hours of screen time each day, exercise for 1 hour a day and drink 0 sugary sodas.  To find out more or to read about the For Kids, By Kids contest, please visit hawaii5210.org.
