On July 2, 2018, U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz said $2.1 million would be awarded to the University of Hawaii Children's Healthy Living Center of Excellence according to the Star Advertiser.

This funding would be a big boost to the children's obesity prevention programs and policies which don't receive the same funding as the rest of the mainland. Hawaii, Alaska, and other Pacific islands doesn't fall under the CDC's (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) national program for health and nutrition.

“Childhood obesity is a problem everywhere, but our state doesn’t have the same resources as those on the mainland to address the issue,” said Schatz in a news release. “This funding allows our state to partner with Alaska and other Pacific islands to better understand what we can do to keep our kids healthy.”
